Planet Earth Blanket

Embark on a daring adventure with this mesmerizing overlay mosaic crochet pattern, showcasing our planet’s map. Create a unique temperature blanket or a classic blanket - either way, it’ll be a treasured memento that will leave others envious.

This pattern for the Planet Earth Blanket is suitable for intermediate level crocheters, who already have experience in the overlay mosaic crochet technique.

The pattern is written in both US and UK crochet terminology, on purchase you will be able to download pdf files of the written pattern in both terminology versions, as well as the chart for the pattern in 9-, 16-, and 25-page formats, with other chart formats available on request.

The pattern has 731 rows with 470 stitches in every row, and makes a very large blanket, and I do recommend crocheting the pattern with a fine yarn such as fingering, baby or sport weight yarn.

When crocheted with a fingering (super-fine) weight yarn and a 2.00mm (size B; No. 13/14) hook (tested using Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/4), the blanket measures approximately 164cm (64.5”) high (North to South) and 290cm (114”) wide (East to West), without an optional border.

Using sport (fine) weight yarn and a 3.50mm (size E, No. 9) hook, the approximate measurements of the blanket (without a border) will be – 214cm (85”) high (North to South) and 333cm (132”) wide (East to West)

Any yarn weight can be used to make the Planet Earth Blanket, please note the blanket does require a large quantity of yarn. If using fingering (super-fine) weight yarn (tested using Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/4, yarn required will differ depending on which yarn brand you choose) – you will need a total of approximately 4430 grams (155.05 ounces) of yarn (14176 metres or 15416.4 yards).

Crochet Hook Cottage

Hi and welcome to Crochet Hook Cottage!

I'm Jodie, the yarn witch who works the design magic here at Crochet Hook Cottage in Perth, Western Australia. Crocheting is my passion, I was taught how to crochet in 1979 by my Nana, and have been hooking away ever since! I began Crochet Hook Cottage in 2019, after losing my job due to health complications as a result of breast cancer treatments. I needed some way to bring in some extra money to pay for food, bills and the mortgage, so when a friend told me I should try selling the items I crocheted the business was born and I opened an Etsy shop. I began designing my own crochet patterns that same year, and there are many more of those to come.

I love designing patterns that have a picture, mainly mosaic, and tapestry crochet, and I hope you love my patterns too!
